1. What are some good things to consider when choosing a contractor?
There are a number of providers of similar products and services in the market and we understand and respect that you have a choice. Each and every provider has varying levels of expertise and performance, and as consumers, we all have to make sure that our hard-earned money is spent wisely.

When choosing a contractor to work on your home or business, please be sure to check that they are qualified / experienced enough to complete the job.

It is not well known that it is REQUIRED BY LAW to have a certified journeyman Refrigeration/Air-Conditioning Mechanic on staff to work on any air-conditioning or refrigeration system. In Alberta, this regulation is waived for residential air-conditioning - BUT ONLY FOR PRE-CHARGED UNITS (this means refrigerators and window-box air-conditioners) . For central air-conditioning, a certified Refrigeration/Air-Conditioning Mechanic is required - it’s the law.

It is ultimately up to the consumer to be sure that the technician working on their equipment be licensed and qualified.

To a reputable company that takes pride in its work, it is not an insult to ask for credentials and references for the people who will be doing your work. Information may include Journeyman Ticket numbers, business license numbers, proof of insurance, and customer references.

Finally, if the contractor’s representative seems sketchy, they probably are. Go with your gut feeling.

2. What are some tips on keeping my house cool?
You can take some of the burden off your air-conditioner by doing a few simple things: close window blinds to avoid sunlight passing through the glass and passively heating your home; when possible, open windows and run exhaust fans at night to take advantage of cooler night-time air; be sure that there is no debris in or around your air-conditioner; and make sure your air-filters are clean, so as not to decrease the air-flow.

3. How do I know if a company is certified to install/service my heating and cooling systems?
There are several ways - first and foremost, check the Better Business Bureau to see if the company is listed and whether there are any comments made by other consumers. Secondly, check with the city to see if the company has a city business license (or visit their shop - the Business License certificate must be displayed in the shop). Ask to see credentials - Journeyman tickets. And lastly, and most importantly, ask for references.
